...The alternate PWP "Customized Light Beams" template image combined with a Sky-Cloud texture:...
121015 UPDATE: see http://www.dl-c.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=660&p=3433#p3432.

120829 UPDATE Notes:
(1)   The alternate template will produce more natural beam effects near the 'origin' point and along the entire beam length...
(2)   The original template will produce more natural 'drama' if the effect is limited to the last two-thirds of the beam length [ie, exclude the origin]...

Right click on a template image and do a 'save picture as'.

The suggested template image has been modified from its 'original' to have 'full dynamic range' on a 50% toned background so that it can be used as the Overlay image in PWP's Composite - Soft Light or Hard Light transform.

The template is RGB black/white so that it can be given a color cast [perhaps 4500K] to simulate a late afternoon sunlight ambience.

It can be 'mirror'-ed and 'warp'-ed using any of the 'Alignment' options of the Composite transform's Overlay iimage.

The following screen shot illustration with mouse on/off comparison shows an example of how the template can be used...
    ...where:
    (1) the template has been 'mirror'-ed and given a 4500K mid-tone color cast...
    (2) the "Alignment: 4-point..." was used with a relocation, rotation, warp, and re-size... and...
    (3) an 'active' mask was used to limit the 'beam' effect to the lower clouds and fog of the Input image.
